This is one of my favorite dishes.. my grandmother used to make it when I was growing up. I haven't had good lentil soup since she died, so I'm going to attempt it myself. Your recipe looks relatively easy! THanks!

Hi Nithya!

Love your site! It is especially useful for clueless cooks like myself!
My sambar always turns out too thick. How much uncooked toor dhal should I use per cup of water?

<em>ND: I usually make about 2 cups of uncooked toor dhal. I probably add about 4-5 cups of water. If the sambar is too thin, just let it boil without the lid on to a thicker consistency. You can also remove some the liquid and whisk in a teaspoon or so of rice flour. Once it's well mixed with the liquid, add it back to the sambar. And if it's too thick, add some water until it's thin enough but taste it again since you may have to increase the sambar powder or tamarind.</em
